the painting takes inspiration from the eye that is painted on Maltese Luzzu (fishing boats) and is said to protect them at sea.
The Luzzu has its roots in Phoenician vessels and it is said that the practice of painting an eye on the vessel also dates back to these times. It is possible that the eye represents the eye of the Phoenician god Melqart , who was revered on the Maltese islands .
this painting represents the concept of the long tradition of protection at sea that the eye of Melqart bestows and indeed the ongoing protection that it has afforded to the luzzu as part of our culture and heritage; the eye having become a symbol of our islands
